Is HRT Safe? What about the risks i’ve heard about?

This is one of the most important questions we get, and we want to address it directly.

In 2002, a large study called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) raised concerns about hormone therapy and breast cancer. The resulting panic led millions of women to stop HRT, and many doctors stopped prescribing it altogether. For over 20 years, that fear shaped how women and their doctors approached menopause treatment.

Here's what has changed since then:
• A 20-year follow-up to the original WHI study found no increase in deaths from breast cancer or heart disease among women who used estrogen-based hormone therapy.
• Current medical consensus holds that for most healthy, symptomatic women under 60, or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks.
• In February 2026, the FDA approved labeling changes to menopausal hormone therapy products and removed several boxed-warning statements that had been in place for years, reflecting the updated evidence.
• Modern HRT uses bioidentical formulations and delivery methods (like transdermal estrogen and micronized progesterone) that have a more favorable safety profile than the older formulations used in the original WHI study.

That said, HRT is not right for every woman. Women with a history of hormone-sensitive cancers, blood clots, stroke, or certain other conditions may not be candidates. How does the pricing work?

Will I speak with a real provider?

Yes. Every Nuvella patient has a live, synchronous consultation with a licensed clinician in their state.

We have hundreds of clinicians across the country who specialize in women's health and hormonal care. Your provider will review your health history, discuss your symptoms, answer your questions, and build a treatment plan that's tailored to you. This is not an automated approval process.

Beyond your provider, you'll also have access to a dedicated nurse care team that specializes in menopause and HRT. They're available for questions, follow-ups, and guidance throughout your entire program. If you need a dose adjustment, have a concern about how you're feeling, or just want to talk through what's normal, your care team is a message or call away.

This is one of the biggest differences between Nuvella and other telehealth HRT providers. Many companies just want to send you meds and move on. We believe the clinical relationship is the product, not just the prescription.

How are treatment plans personalized?

Your Nuvella treatment plan is built around you, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

During your consultation, your provider evaluates your specific symptoms, severity, health history, risk factors, medications, and personal goals. Based on that conversation, they design a protocol that may include some or all of the therapies in the Nuvella HRT Starter Kit: estradiol topical cream, progesterone capsules, vaginal estradiol, and DHEA.

But personalization doesn't stop at day one. Your program includes a structured symptom check-in at the 6 to 8 week mark where you'll rate how your symptoms have responded across seven key areas: hot flashes, night sweats, sleep quality, mood, brain fog, energy, and sexual function. Based on your responses, your provider may adjust your dosing, modify your protocol, or order blood work to guide the next phase of care. As your body changes, your plan evolves with you. That’s what makes this a program, not just a prescription.

Are results guaranteed?

We cannot guarantee specific results because every woman's body, health history, and hormonal profile is different. What we can guarantee is the quality of care you'll receive.

Your treatment is prescribed by a licensed clinician who specializes in women's health. Your medications are compounded at fully licensed U.S. pharmacies and third-party tested for purity, potency, and quality. Your program includes structured check-ins, blood work integration when needed, and a nurse care team that's with you every step of the way.
